The Poynter Institute reports, The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis, TN published a list of names of people who have permits to carry concealed weapons. The article was about how many people who have concealed weapon permits have committed violent crimes. Now the Tennessee legislation in considering making it a felony for publishing the state lists of people who have permits to carry conceal weapons.
The newspaper has received a lot of criticism for publishing the list. According to the Poynter Institute, people believe the list could cause more criminal activity. Others believe it is an invasion of privacy.
According to the Poynter Institute, permit records are public information and the news paper had the right to publish the list.
· How can Tennessee lawmakers make it a felony to publish names from the concealed weapons, even if it is public records under FOIA?
· With growing concerns of criminal activity increasing, could the list be categorized as material that should be withheld from the public?
